Eyes that Bind
It's the hue of the sky, she thought as she gripped the stone railing, but just as
quickly disregarded that notion. It was also not so much the color of the water that
glistened under the new morning sun. Although it was a warm blue-black and reminded her of
her youth, happy as it was, it was the wrong color entirely.
It was not the color of the Remembrance Blooms that were open over her head. Their blue
was of the cornflower variety, what her mother would have called azure. No...that blue was
too weak, too under hued and watery.
Nor, she thought as she leaned forward, allowing the morning breeze to brush her hair back
for her, was it the color of the new grass. At least his eyes were not that green. They
were not the color of freshly mined jade from Corellia, either.
Neither color suited her to describe his eyes. And with a sigh, she shifted her weight. It
all depended, she decided, on what he was wearing. His tunics, their ecru and tan, brought
out the green undertones, but his dark robe made the blue jump and sparkle. Once, when she
was younger and somewhat more impressionable, she had viewed his eyes set off against the
blue of his saber. In her befuddled young mind, she had always, from that time forward,
associated his eyes with that color.
But now, those same eyes set in his tanned and bewhiskered face, were a strange and
haunting off green and blue color.
She glanced down and watched a single leaf traverse the gentle tide of the lake. It was an
older leaf, one of the first to fall for the autumn. Its green was perfect, but upon its
pad a single blue bloom had melted, joined with it. It was like a ghostly film of summer
superimposed on the cold of approaching winter, but as she watched it, she realized that
the muted mixed color was the perfect match for his eyes.
Obi-Wan's eyes.
Her hands dug into the solid stone of the railing and she sighed, deeply and worriedly. A
discourse on the color of a Jedi Master's eyes should not be her first thought in the
morning. She was a Senator, a woman with responsibilities who was currently in exile on
her home planet for her own safety with the Padawan Learner of that Jedi Master...
With a groan; she shook her head, biting her lip. She was in the presence of a Jedi
Padawan that made her feel uneasy. His admiration of her bordered on obsession; oh she
might have been flattered if she had not been knowledgeable of that fact. Obsession was
not love; it was not healthy.
Healthy was green. Like here on Naboo in the autumn. Green grass, green trees, green world
with its flowing blue-black water; that was health.
Like the color of a pair of intense hazel eyes smiling at her in greeting. Those were the
type of eyes that bind. Yes, Jedi Master Kenobi had wonderfully clear and friendly eyes.
With a small smile, she turned and strolled up the veranda, her hand trailing on the cool
stone railing still wet with morning dew.
